Dermal Fillers

Contouring and Structural Rejuvenation

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal filler is the product used to correct volume loss, shape and contour, and reduce the appearance of fine lines. It is a sterile solution of hyaluronic acid (a natural occuring gel produced in the body) which is injected into the affected area.

Hyaluronic acid binds with water in your skin which may rehydrate it and improve skin quality. Fillers integrate with your own tissues over time to give natural looking results.

Many types of dermal fillers are available on the market, and different fillers are used for different areas of the face. For example, lips require a soft filler to give natural results, whereas a thicker filler is used in the cheeks to give support to the facial structure.

Fillers also vary in terms of quality, and there are several new, cheaper brands making it into clinics. Always ask your practitioner which filler they intend to use. At Dr Vaughan Aesthetics, only high quality brands of hyaluronic acid facial fillers are used.

Dermal Fillers can be used to:

  • Restore volume lost with age

  • Add contour

  • Add fullness to your cheeks

  • Soften lines between the nose and mouth

  • Soften lines between the mouth and chin

  • Improve appearance of smoker's lines

  • Lift aspects of the face to a more youthful position

  • Enhance lip shape and volume

  • Plump the back of the hands and restore a youthful hand structure

What should I expect?

Most patients find the injections only cause mild, temporary discomfort. Usually the area is anaesthetised with local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort.

Results can be seen immediately, but full results are seen after 14 days. The treatment will last anywhere between 6-18 months depending on the area treated, but starts to wear off before this. Repeat treatments are usually needed every 6-9 months.

No medical procedure is without risk, and you will discuss these thoroughly with your practitioner in your consultation prior to treatment. Some risks of dermal filler include: swelling, bruising, redness, bleeding, numbness, cold sores, infection, allergic reaction, vascular occlusion and tissue necrosis. To minimise these risks, choose a practitioner with suitable qualifications, training, and experience.

  • Avoid touching and rubbing the treated areas, and do not massage the area

  • Do not apply make up to the area for 24 hours

  • Do not drink alcohol for 24 hours

  • Do not carry out heavy exercise for 24 hours
